What to see

For those who like the beach, there are beaches near Azkoitia: in Zumaia, Getaria and Zarautz, to enjoy with your family.

The cities San Sebastián, Bilbao, Pamplona and Vitoria are at 35 and 50 minutes and Hendaye (France) at 1 hour by car.

Below you can see a sample of interesting places that can be visited by its proximity.

The Izarraitz massif located in the Urola valley, within the municipalities of Azkoitia, Azpeitia and Zestoa, has been declared a Protected Natural Space and is spread over 1,531.5 hectares having three major mountains: Erlo (1026m), Kakute (942m) and Xoxote (930m).

The Hernio-Gazume area is a calcareous formation composed of karst caves and rocky peaks. It has been declared as a Special Area of Conservation and is part of the Natura 2000 network. In total it has 2,160 hectares spread among the municipalities of Aia, Albiztur, Alkiza, Asteasu, Bidegoian, Errezil, Hernialde, Larraul and Tolosa.

The Geopark of the westesrn Basque Coast is formed by a spectacular coastline that offers us a highly valuable geological, landscape and cultural heritage. This coastal area that encompasses the towns of Zumaia, Deba and Mutriku is part of the European Geoparks Network.

The Itzurun urban sand beach is one of the most beautiful beaches on the coast of Gipuzkoa. It is surrounded by high cliffs and is known for flysch phenomenon, a set of limestone and sandstone rock sheets in vertical formation that create a spectacular scenery.

The seaman Juan Sebastián Elkano and the couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga. The original txakoli and the fish grills. Something would happen here for such a small village like Getaria to be the birthplace of so many stimuli. Mount San Antón, known as the Getaria’s Mouse, gets into the sea and protects the port. In the Middle Ages, the boats set sail from this port in search of the whale that appears in the village’s coat of arms.

Its long beach and its wide hotel and service offer makes Zarautz a perfect village for spending the summer… or any other part of the year. Zarautz preserves some of the sea character of that medieval village devoted to whaling -a cetacean, a castle and a lion appear in its coat of arms-.

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, a castle on the rock at sea. An impressive islet off the coast of Bermeo and one of the most magical places in Bizkaia. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is connected to the mainland by a stone bridge and a stretch of land forming two arches. At a point, the bridge turns into a zigzagging narrow 241-step footbridge leading to the top of the rock, where the picturesque shrine stands.

Urdaibai: The green lungs of Bizkaia. Urdaibai is a must for nature lovers coming to Bizkaia. It is a green treasure and a natural paradise, featuring fine-sand beaches, leafy wetlands and lots of amazing birds.
